Our New Menu
We have a new breakfast menu available this week, please pop in and try it out. We’ve spiced up our menu with some new innovative dishes and kept all of your old favourites. We guarantee you’ll love our gourmet toasted sandwiches, the most popular of which so far is our toasted salami, Dalewood cheese, and tomato grilled cheese. So come on by and spoil yourself with a delectable breakfast today.
What’s happening in the kitchen?
Our students are in the final stage of preparing for their mid year internships, helped along in their culinary journey by the indispensable experience they receive working in the MOM kitchen. This week we had a bit of fun, and challenged the students to raid the fridge and use their creativity to design this week’s menu. We hope you’ve been enjoying it! Tips from our kitchen
This weeks tip comes from Chef Pierre, our resident Pastry Chef and one of the Hurst Campus Lecturers. Chef Pierre tells us that a key component to creating successful dishes is to learn about classic combinations and flavors that mesh together. Read, watch T.V, and ingrain these combinations into your mind. A chilli chocolate tart with deep fried onion rings, for example, are not flavors that will complement each other. Try instead a chocolate tart infused with chilli and orange served with vanilla ice cream-it’s sure to be a winner.
What’s in our fridge?
This week our display fridge is filled with delicious cakes and tarts, suitable for a treat any time of the day. These are the items you’ll always find in a fridge, so you can be sure to always find your favourite: carrot cake, cheesecake of some variety – either baked or fridge, chocolate cake – either ganache or mousse, gluten free death by chocolate cake and chocolate brownies. For the savoury lovers among you, you’ll always be able to find a veggie quiche, a quiche lorraine, chicken and mushroom pie, pepper steak pie, and a R35 sandwich of the day. We also have an on-the-go breakfast bun available (either bacon or pork sausage with egg and cheese). Finally, you’ll always find fresh-baked flaky pastries and croissants at MOM Café.
What’s on our shelves?
In addition to freshly made food and pastries, we offer pre-made packaged snacks that you can take home and enjoy (or eat in the car on the way back, we’d understand!). This week we have bran and buttermilk rusks for sale, along with squares of yummy fudge and coconut ice. We also offer a new variety of quiche, a delectable pear and walnut. This week our new Mosbolletjie bread was a real hit, so grab some before it’s all gone.
What’s on in Paarl?
From the 29th of July till 3rd of August, Paarl will come to a standstill with the Interschools sports rivalry between Paarl Boys and Paarl Gymnasium. The main Hockey game will be on Saturday 3rd August, in the morning and the main Rugby game will take place in the afternoon. As every year an expected 25000 people will flock to support their team.
Chef Guy Bennett visited the campus to chat to the 1st Year Students about his journey over the past 9 years. He gave them lots of tips on how to make the most of their internship cycle by giving their best every single day. He also stressed the importance of continuously educating yourself, reading, following successful chefs and their dishes on Instagram and to make a point of networking and trying out new and seasonal ingredients.
